Candles are a popular choice for creating a cosy and relaxing atmosphere, but many people wonder if they can set off fire alarms. The short answer is, yes it is possible but unlikely and with a few common sense precautions, setting off fire alarms can be avoided.
All our candles and wax melts are hand poured with soy wax or soy wax blended with other plant-based candle waxes. We do not use paraffin wax. Soy wax is known for its cleaner burn with less soot than paraffin wax and this alone should reduce the chances of your candle setting off a fire alarm.
If a candle produces a significant amount of smoke, it can trigger a smoke detector. Paraffin candle wax can produce more smoke than cleaner burning plant-based candle waxes, such as soy wax. (We only use soy wax in our candles, no parafin wax).
Keep your candle wick properly trimmed and put out candles with a snuffer - both will minimise smoke.
If a candle is placed too close to a smoke detector, even a small amount of smoke can trigger the alarm.
Some smoke detectors are more sensitive than others. Ionization smoke detectors, which are more common, are particularly sensitive to small particles of smoke.
Poor room ventilation and a lack of general air flow in any room or space. This can cause smoke to accumulate and increase the likelihood of setting off a smoke detector.
