The word "soapery" is a noun that refers to a place where soap is made. It is derived from the word "soap," which comes from the Old English word "sāpe." The word "sāpe" is related to the Old High German word "seifa" and the Latin word "sapo."
The word "soapery" is not a commonly used term in the current day English language. In its simplest definition, a soapery is a place where soap is made but it can also be used to describe the art or craft of soap-making. A soapery typically encompasses all aspects of soap production, including the creation of soap bars, liquid hand wash soaps, and other related products. Soap making has a long and fascinating history that dates back to ancient times. The earliest history of soap making dates back nearly 5,000 years, with written recipes for soap variations from Mesopotamia, Egypt, ancient Greece, and Rome times. The earliest evidence of soap making can be traced back to 2800 BC in ancient Babylon, where a clay tablet was discovered that contained a recipe for soap made from ash, water, and cassia oil.
Soap making was also practiced in ancient Egypt, where they used a combination of animal and vegetable oils to create a soap-like substance. The Egyptians were known to use this substance for both personal hygiene and as a cleaning agent. The Ebers papyrus, a medical document from about 1500 BC, describes combining animal and vegetable oils with alkaline salts to form a soap-like material used for treating skin diseases, as well as for washing.
In ancient Rome, soap making became a thriving industry, with soap makers using olive oil as a base and adding various fragrances and colors to create different types of soap. The Romans were known for their love of cleanliness, and soap became a popular commodity throughout the Roman Empire.
During the Middle Ages, soap making was primarily practiced by monasteries and nuns, who used the soap for medicinal purposes. It wasn't until the 16th century that soap making became more widespread, with soap makers beginning to use vegetable oils rather than animal fats.
In the 19th century, the invention of new manufacturing processes and the discovery of new raw materials led to significant advancements in soap making. The introduction of industrial production methods made soap more widely available and affordable for the general public.
