What is the Difference between Skeins, Hanks and even Balls of Yarn?

The terms "skein" and "hank" often seem to be used interchangeably, but they are different! So what do we mean by the word "Skein" and what is a skein of yarn on our website?

Definition of a Skein of Yarn

A skein is wound into a long loop usually by hand, folded into itself, and secured with a knot.

How Many Grams in a Skein

Almost all of the yarn for sale on this website is available as a skein of yarn, usually of 100 grams although we also sell some 20 gram (mini skeins), 50 gram (midi skeins) and 200 gram skeins.

After a skein of yarn is untwisted, you’ll have a loose loop of yarn that needs to be wound into a ball before it can be used for knitting. From experience, learned the hard way, it is difficult to knit directly from a skein. It can get messy and time will be saved in the end, if you start with a ball of yarn and not a skein!

    Balls of Yarn:

A ball of yarn is 'what is says on the tin' - yarn wound into a ball shape! Skeins of yarn need to be unwound and turned into a ball prior to use for knitting. We have a ball-winding service, if required for any yarn purchased on this website.
