    Pumpkins and Pumkin Candles

Pumpkins and pumpkin candles are a vital part of every Halloween celebration, event, or party. This tradition isn't a modern invention but is deeply rooted in cultural practices and history that span many years. Originating from the Celtic festival of Samhain, where people carved turnips into lanterns to ward off spirits, the custom was adapted in America. Irish immigrants introduced the practice of carving Jack-o'-lanterns, and pumpkins, being more plentiful and easier to carve, became the favoured choice. Today, pumpkins and pumpkin candles are a central symbol of Halloween festivities.

    Pumpkins, Pumpkin Candles and Halloween

Pumpkins and pumpkin candles have along been associated with Halloween. Its roots are part of various cultural traditions and historical practices. Originally linked to the Celtic festival of Samhain, it became popular with the later adoption of these traditions by American settlers.

    • Celtic Festival of Samhain: An ancient Celtic festival marking the end of the harvest season and the beginning of winter. It was believed that on the night of October 31st, the boundary between the living and the dead was blurred, allowing spirits to roam the Earth. To ward off these spirits, people carved faces into turnips, potatoes, or beets and placed candles inside them to create lanterns. These lanterns, known as Jack-o'-lanterns, were intended to scare away evil spirits.
    • The Legend of Stingy Jack: The term "Jack-o'-lantern" comes from an Irish folktale about a man named Sting Jack. According to the legend, Jack tricked the Devil multiple times, and when he died, he was not allowed into either Heaven or Hell. Instead, he was doomed to wander the Earth with only a burning coal inside a carved-out turnip to light his way. This story contributed to the tradition of carving frightening faces into vegetables.
    • Immigration to America and the Introduction of Pumpkins: When Irish immigrants came to the United States in the 19th century, they brought the tradition of carving Jack-o'-lanterns with them. However, they found that pumpkins, native to North America, were much larger, easier to carve, and more abundant than the turnips, potatoes, or beets they had used in Ireland. Pumpkins quickly became the preferred medium for these lanterns, and over time, they became a symbol of Halloween.
