Candles do produce a small amount of heat, but they are not effective for heating a room. To generate any meaningful warmth, you would need tens of candles in a medium sized room. Due to the impracticality of this and fire risk safety concerns, candles should not be relied upon as a heat source and are better suited for creating ambience.
Candles are, of course, a burning flame and like all flames they produce heat. So yes, candles do heat up a room.... but only very, very slightly! To get any sort of meaningful heat from candles, so many would be needed that they would become a fire hazard - so no, we do not suggest that you try it!
Still not convinced? Just for information, a group of say 10 'average' size candles might product about 800 to 1,000 watts of heat, let's say 100 watts per candle to make the maths easy!!! To put this into context, a normal electric fire would produce 2,000 or 4,000 (a 2 kilowwatt or 4 kilowatt fire) watts of heat. You can see that to get any sort of meaningful heat, you would need 20 to 40 candles burning at once and many more in a large room or space.
We have tried it on a fairly cool (not cold) day with 30 candles - it really does not heat up a room very well at all - and keeping an eye on 30 candles at once for safety reasons is a nightmare!
