At FelinFach wool is at the heart of our business, especially our Welsh woolen blankets. Every blanket is woven with brand-new wool - we don't sell any used or 'vintage' blankets and they're all woven right here in Wales. Nothing says 'Hiraeth' more than iconic Welsh Blankets.
We ship all our Welsh woolen blankets to Canada. We use Parcelforce courier (part of the UK's Royal Mail) for international shipping, with final delivery handled by local carriers in North America. You'll get an order confirmation email with a tracking link, so you can follow your package from start to finish, door to door. Generally speaking, your order should arrive in North America within 7 to 10 business days.
There's something truly magical about wrapping yourself in a cozy, handwoven woolen blanket — especially one steeped in history and tradition. Welsh tapestry blankets, with their iconic patterns and rich heritage, are a beautiful symbol of the Welsh woolen industry. These blankets have warmed generations of families and homes, carrying with them a deep sense of nostalgia and belonging.
In fact, there's a special Welsh word that captures this feeling perfectly — Hiraeth. Pronounced "heer-eyeth," it’s a deep longing for home, a wistful affection for a place or time that may no longer exist. It’s more than just homesickness — it’s a connection to your roots, your family, and the warmth of tradition. And nothing captures the essence of Hiraeth quite like an authentic Welsh woolen blanket.
Handwoven in Wales using traditional and contemporary colors, our collection of Welsh blankets embodies the heart and soul of Welsh craftsmanship. Each blanket is a testament to generations of skilled weavers who have preserved these beautiful designs over centuries.
Among the most recognizable patterns in Welsh tapestry is the Caernarfon (pronounced kair-nar-von) pattern, also known as the Portcullis pattern. Its bold geometric design, featuring interlocking portcullises — a symbol of strength and protection — has made it one of the most cherished and timeless patterns in Welsh weaving. This pattern became especially popular in the 1950s and '60s, and it’s likely the image that comes to mind when you think of a traditional Welsh blanket.
But did you know these beautiful patterns also found their way across the Atlantic? When large waves of Welsh immigrants settled in North America in the late 1700s, they brought their weaving traditions with them. In places like Pennsylvania, where many Welsh families made their new homes, the influence of Welsh tapestry designs can still be seen in the quilts and blankets of neighboring Amish communities. In fact, the striking resemblance between Amish quilts and Welsh blankets is no coincidence — it’s a beautiful example of how traditions transcend borders.
Another classic but less common Welsh blanket pattern is the Dyffryn (or Duffryn) pattern, along with the Pennsylvania pattern, both of which are deeply connected to the migration story and Welsh heritage in America.
While traditional Welsh tapestry blankets were often large, heavy, and meant to keep families warm through harsh winters, modern handwoven versions offer a contemporary twist while still honoring the age-old patterns. Our online store offers a beautiful selection of handwoven Welsh blankets, all made in Wales using the iconic Caernarfon pattern in a more compact and versatile size (approximately 70 x 55 inches). These blankets are softer to the touch and ideal for cozying up on the couch or adding a touch of timeless charm to your home.
Whether you have Welsh roots or simply appreciate the artistry of handwoven textiles, these blankets are more than just home décor — they’re a piece of history, a hug from the past, and a beautiful embodiment of Hiraeth.
