10 Welsh Words Added to Oxford English Dictionary - 19th September 2024

The Oxford English Dictionary contains more than 500,000 words, phrases and their meanings, from over 1000 years of English language. The dictionary is widely regarded as the accepted authority on the English language.

The dictionary is updated four times a year, and in its 19th September 2024 update, it added more than 600 new words, including ten Welsh words. These Welsh words were added because of their use in everyday spoken and written English over a "reasonable period of time".

1. Cawl, a Welsh soup but more than a soup - a meal in itself!
2. Calennig, a New Year's gift or custom.
3. Iechyd da, literally good health but usually means cheers when toasting with a drink..
4. Mam-gu, grandmother (south Wales ) - Nain, north Wales has already been included.
5. Senedd, the name of the Welsh parliament.
6. Sglods, chips as in fish and chips.
7. Tad-cu, grandfather in South Wales.
8. Taid, grandfather in north Wales.
9. Twp, stupid.
10. Ych a fi, horrible or disgusting.
